In a letter to the editor on the topic of Gaza this week, Marc Côté explains that when he was a boy, “the defence ‘He hit me first’ was unacceptable. ‘Two wrongs,’ my mother would say, ‘don’t make a right.’”
Time out for a disclosure: Our correspondent is a friend. Marc Côté published my last book. He may publish my next one, too — unless this column changes his mind. If I pick a fight with him, I won’t even be able to say “He hit me first!” Oh well; who said life was going to be easy?
Moving on. Yes, indeed; two wrongs don’t add up to a right. My mother would have told me the same thing. But what does this say about the current carnage in Gaza? We agree the first wrong is Hamas launching rockets into Israel, but what is the second wrong?
