A soft word may turn away wrath, but it’s useless to kiss the posterior of bullies. They regard it as lip service. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu probably knew this, but still allowed U.S. President Barack Obama to talk him into apologizing to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for Israeli commandos defending themselves after they boarded the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara when it attempted to break a lawful maritime blockade in 2010.

Predictably, far from turning away wrath, Israel’s apology resulted in Erdogan’s announcement that the apology was insufficient to restore Israel-Turkish relations without a payment of compensation, while the Arab League discussed a demand for similar apologies for Israel defending itself against Hamas and Hezbollah attacks in Lebanon, Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Acceding to such demands would make Israel the first country in history to compensate its enemies for successfully defending itself.

I doubt if Netanyahu expected anything…
