Canadian Facebook fans will be the first to test drive a new service that will enable users of the world’s largest social networking site to make Voice over IP (VoIP) phone calls via the Facebook Messenger mobile application.

Facebook Inc. announced the test program today as part of a series of upgrades to its Messenger application, which includes enabling users to send voice clips through Messenger through the iOS and Android versions of the application.

The Canadian trial of the VoIP service will be initially offered to users of Facebook’s iOS application for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users.
