Foreign Minister John Baird said today that Canada was “considering all available next steps” after the United Nations voted to recognize Palestinian statehood.

The 193-nation General Assembly approved the implicit recognition of Palestine as a “non-member state” — similar status to that of the Vatican — despite fierce opposition from Israel and the United States.

Palestinians erupted in wild cheers, hugging each other and honking car horns after the vote of 138 in favour, nine against and 41 abstentions.

In the central celebration in the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds crowding into the main square waved Palestinian flags and chanted “God is great.”
